Dungeons and Dragons Chat (Revised)
Welcome to Dungeons and Dragons Chat, a chat room designed to help those who enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons- but
don't have the time to do so. This chat was made to host a Dungeons and Dragons game over the internet. The program features
many tools such as virtual dice, and is also fast and easy to use. And best of all- it's completally free!
If you think this site should have a forum, click here.
UPDATE:
August 1, 2009
I know a lot of people think I'm a jerk for never answering their emails. I am a jerk, but I'm usually an email-answering jerk; the email that was on this page was old and not checked, until recently when I remembered it existed. So sorry to everyone who had trouble with this software. I'm going to post a tutorial on this page below the download links, to help anyone who needs it. Also, the email link has been updated, so you can now get a hold of me if something does not work.
You'll probably also notice that the lite chat version is gone. That's because SendSpace is cranky, and won't let me keep a file there for more than a few weeks. Since the music feature was limited and obviously way too bulky, I'm taking it down permanently and making the lite version the only version. Trust me, you're not missing anything. I've also removed the installer feature, it was more of an inconvenience than anything. The EXE file will work anywhere on your computer, just download and run.
As a final step, I've uploaded the editable GMK file (for GameMaker 6.1, my favorite version) of the software so that if there are any new bugs that either I can't fix or are too oblivious to notice, someone else in the D&D community with Game Maker skills should be able to patch it up. Also, I've fixed a couple of bugs, mainly with the name changer. It should work now; if you wern't sure before, it because the dungeon master could see the name change, but no one else could.
About this Chat:
This chat was created by Evan Kice (me) in 2007, and was actually created because the server on the old chat I used was always down.
So, I created a new one for my friends and I, and later published it for public use. The program was created using
Game Maker, a game creation program made by Mark Overmars. Most of the images (mainly the
loading bars and icon) ware taken from Morphius (his collections are on the GameMaker resource page).
Software Features:
The game has some interesting features that Dungeons and Dragons fans will really like:
- IP connection: You game is played privately over an IP connection, so other people won't get in your way.
- Three types of text input: Your cahracter can either say something, do something, or you can talk out of character (ooc).
- Virtual Dice: You can roll Virtual dice right in the chat room! There is a d6, d20, d8, and a programmable dice button for everything else!
Dungeon Masters get thier own tools, as well as the ones that PCs get:
- Description (DM) text: Like the 'Say', or 'Do' text, the Description text allows the DM to describe the setting, without the chat showing thier name.
- Changable name: The DM can change thier name freely, to compensate for all of the NPCs that they must talk as.
- Secret roll: DMs can make secret rolls on the virtual dice, they only show up on the DMs screen!

(This email actually works now.)
Help Desk:
If you have any problems with this software, here an FAQ to help you a little. If these don't help, feel free to email me.
- Q: How do you connect?
- A: The first text box that pops up will ask you for an IP address. You'll need the IP of the computer that's hosting your session (usually the DM or the person with the fastest computer). If that person is you, leave the box blank. If that person is not you, you'll need to contact them and get their IP. To check a computer's IP address, just go to IP Chicken.
- Q: How do you become the Dungeon Master?
- A: Very simply, you press F12. A box will pop up asking if you would like to be DM, just click "Yes". Be careful though, becoming the DM will automatically send out a message saying you've done so, so you won't be able to mess with your friends without them knowing.
- Q: The IP address/name box isn't showing up. What do I do?
- A: It's probably hiding behind the loading bar. This happens sometimes. There should be a gray box poking out from behind the box that says "Loading" or "Connecting", click on it to bring it to the front.
- Q: Will this work on my Mac?
- A: It should if you use parallels.
- Q: Is there a public version of this chat?
- A: No, this chat is made to host D&D sessions between people who have already met. If you want a place to meet up and talk about D&D/set up a session, you could use a D&D forum- there are a few on the internet, just search for them.
I'm curious, so if you would like a forum here to use, click here. If enough people click, I'll make a forum on this site for you to use.
I'll update this FAQ more as I get more emails.
Thank you for downloading! -Evan Kice
